WHY IS SUCH A LARGE AREA INCLUDED? The information has been provided to assist people in getting a picture of what services are available in the areas around Canberra. The 'Canberra Region' is not normally considered to be so large, and usually only takes in an area bordered by Yass & Goulburn to the north, Braidwood to the east, Cooma to the south, and Wee Jasper in the west. The list on this page has been made so large because it is obvious that people in more outlying areas may not have access to some of this information on the internet, and because, frankly, every little bit of information helps, especially when a person is first diagnosed with Schizophrenia, or any mental illness. As well, people in the 'Canberra Region' may find it possible to access services outside the region. HOW TO USE THIS PAGE The information has been provided for either the people who live in the areas covered, or people who need to contact services in the areas covered. The information is for the most part in alphabetical order, to accommodate your usage. The information may be useful in an emergency. HOWEVER, it is strongly advised that you have already gone through this list, as well as talked to your doctor, supporters, and others about what you can/should do, and have this information prepared IN ADVANCE OF AN EMERGENCY. Mental illness is like any other illness in this respect. People with diabetes, cancer, lupus and a myriad of other illnesses are expected to be able to look after themselves. If you manage yourself properly, do not ignore your problems, and take a responsible, balanced approach to Schizophrenia, you can manage it when there are tough times. WHY ARE CARAVAN PARKS, LIBRARIES, AND OTHER SERVICES UNRELATED TO MENTAL HEALTH INCLUDED? These services, and many others, can be very useful for people with mental illness, especially people in crises - caravan parks might afford cheap accommodation, and libraries may provide essentail information. Other services like the local CWA or Lions clubs can provide contacts to supports in your region, activities for people who need something to do, or even direct emotional support. Saint Vinnies, the Salvos, the Smith Family, among other charitable organisations, may provide emergency shelter, food, cheap clothing and household items, and support in getting appropriate medical attention. Taxi or bus services can assist people who would otherwise be isolated to get to medical appointments, or visit friends. One of the best sources of information SHOULD be your local government/shire/council chambers - I say SHOULD because I know that sometimes people there are overworked and may not have time to assist you. Local Newspapers may be interested in local people who are advocating for improved mendical services. Finally, people working at tourist information centres may know of services that can help you, or may have an office or newsletter which has information on local supports you can access. Essentially, all this information goes to create a support network for a person, and it is a good a idea to spend some time investigating the many different services that are available to you, so you can easily access the most appropriate ones when you need them. INFORMATION SOURCES These include telephone books, councils/shires, internet directories, and some other less permanent sources of information such as tourist brochures.
